Charging for Babysitting
While some babysitters charge weekly or monthly rates, babysitting hourly rates are the most common method of payment. Babysitters who decide to charge by the hour need to take several factors into consideration before advertising or operating their services. First of all, hourly rates for childcare generally vary depending on the day of the job. If the job is on a week night, for example, a babysitter may charge less for childcare than they would on a Friday night or weekend. Also, hourly rates can differ depending on whether the job is in the morning, afternoon or evening. Morning or afternoon babysitting jobs generally bring in less money than those in the evening. Finally, the total amount of time spent babysitting should be taken into consideration when determining how much to charge per hour. For example, if you are planning to provide a family with babysitting for full days, overnight or for a weekend, hourly rates may need to be less in order to compete with other babysitters who charge a flat rate for extended childcare services. Babysitting Pay: How Much to Expect Babysitters will earn varied salaries depending on their experience, the responsibilities they will have, the number of children they are babysitting, and the average rate that babysitters charge in that area. Babysitting pay will also differ based on whether the sitter charges by the hour, day, week or month. Another aspect to consider when figuring how much pay to expect for babysitting is the day of the week. Weekends will generally bring in more salary than weekdays. Additionally, if you intend to provide childcare for full days, overnight or for entire weekends, you can expect to earn larger amounts. Full-time babysitting jobs will usually equate to greater pay than part-time ones. Taking all of these factors into consideration, the average hourly pay for babysitters is about $10. The lower end may earn anywhere between $5 and $9 per hour, whereas the higher end could reach to $15 per hour. Overnight babysitting usually draws on hourly pay during waking hours and a flat fee (generally ranging from $25-$50) once the children are sleeping. Full days or weekends also tend to be based on flat fees, bringing in anywhere from $75 to $125 per day depending on the factors listed previously. Babysitting Rates Babysitting rates vary all across the country and depend on a variety of factors. Some of these factors include the location, the number of children, and the specific responsibilities of a babysitting job. Urban areas generally mean higher babysitting rates. Also, if the location of the job is more than a short walk or drive away, rates can increase in order to cover the extra gas, time and energy the babysitter will expend to get there. Likewise, if the job includes care for more than one or two children, babysitters will charge more for the extra effort it takes to properly care for all of them. Having their attention divided means the sitter will generally have to work twice or even three times as hard. Additionally, if the responsibilities consist of more than simply watching the children, the babysitter may choose to charge a higher rate. Rates can also fluctuate based on the babysitter’s breadth of childcare knowledge and experience, especially within a certain age group of children. The more certification and familiarity a babysitter has with childcare, the higher their rates should be. If the sitter has a broad range of experience in caring for a particular age group, they may select families with children of that age so they can implement their expertise and charge a higher rate. Determining How Much To Charge For Babysitting While babysitting can often seem like more fun than work, it is important to be compensated properly for the service. Determining how much to charge for babysitting depends on a few factors. These aspects include location, number of children, specific responsibilities, and the amount of certification and experience you have. Babysitting rates can vary based on whether the family in need of childcare is in an urban or rural area. Urban areas tend to have higher living costs and wealthier families, in which cases a higher rate can be appropriate. Ask around to see what your friends or family might know about babysitting rates in your area. Also, when considering location, keep in mind that a slightly higher rate can be charged if the job is more than a short walk or drive away. The number of children is a significant factor in determining the right amount to charge for babysitting. More children require more of your attention. Generally the same rate can be applied for one or two children, but if the family has three or more, an additional charge should be issued for each child. For example, if your standard rate is $10/hr for one or two children, you might consider charging an additional $2/hr for a third. The specific responsibilities required for the job should always be taken into consideration when thinking about how much to charge for babysitting services. A standard rate should be charged for simply watching and playing with the kids. If, however, the parents expect their babysitter to drive, cook or perform light housework, a higher rate should be considered to balance the extra work. Finally, the breadth of your experience and certification can make or break a good babysitting salary. More experience, especially with a certain age group, should equate to a larger paycheck. Also, if you are CPR certified or have taken babysitting classes, your rates may be adjusted. Flat Fee Babysitting Charge Flat fee babysitting charges are quite popular. In fact, sometimes charging a flat fee can be more appealing to families who need babysitting services than hourly rates would be. Instead of charging by the hour, a babysitter who utilizes a flat fee rate might charge by the afternoon or evening. Several more ideas for flat fee jobs include overnight babysitting, weekend childcare, holiday sitting and scaled rate jobs. Overnight childcare generally consists of a flat rate for actual “sleep time.” For example, an overnight babysitting job could earn an hourly rate from 7am-9pm, and then a flat fee of $50 for the night. Weekends can be allotted a certain amount of pay for each day. For instance, a babysitter providing childcare for a weekend might charge a flat rate of $75-$125 per day. Holidays work the same way: babysitters will negotiate a flat fee for the day, generally a higher fee than would be charged on a normal day. Additionally, scaled rates can be offered by accepting a flat rate for a specified time and then charging an additional rate for extended services beyond that time. An example of a scaled rate job would be charging $20 for the first three hours, and $5 for each additional hour. How Much To Charge For Babysitting Infants And Toddlers Babysitting infants and very young children will merit higher pay than childcare for older children. Babies and toddlers demand a lot of attention and hard work. Whereas older children are able to feed, clothe, bathe and in many ways take care of themselves, very young children need constant assistance in these areas. Older children can play games, watch television, or carry on conversations, but infants and toddlers need to be held and nourished continuously. They will also require diaper changes, which in and of itself increases the necessity for greater compensation. Babysitting rates for such young children are usually $1-$3/hr higher than standard babysitting rates for other ages. Charging just a dollar or two per hour more than you normally would for older children is the easiest way to determine how much to charge for babysitting infants and toddlers. How Much To Charge For Holiday Babysitting Babysitting on the holidays is an excellent opportunity to help parents out and make a lot of money, too. Holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are the most popular for babysitting needs. However, occasions such as Labor Day, Independence Day, Valentine’s Day and others can also provide a great opportunity to make some extra money. When considering how much to charge for babysitting on the holidays, it can be easiest to come up with a flat rate for the entire day or evening. The rate should be based on the holiday, how many children you will be babysitting, the ages of the children, what kind of responsibilities you will have, how many hours of the day you are needed and your general experience with childcare. Another option is to negotiate an hourly rate, which should be a couple dollars more than your standard rate. Since babysitters are harder to come by on holidays, families who need babysitting during such observances are generally willing to pay a little more than what they usually would on normal days. How To Get Paid For Babysitting While some babysitting services can be free of charge (for relatives or close friends), most babysitting jobs should be compensated. In such cases, it is important to get paid appropriately. To charge for a babysitting job, first determine exactly how high your childcare rates will be.
